Magnesium and migraines

Low magnesium levels may affect the human nervous system and have an impact on the frequency and intensity of migraine attacks.

MAGNESIUM REDUCES MIGRAINES ATTACKS AND PAIN

About ten million people in Germany suffer from migraines, which are associated above all with intense headaches. Migraines can have a devastating impact on the quality of life of people who experience them on a regular basis. It is not always clear what causes migraines, however people who suffer from migraines often have low levels of magnesium in their blood. Furthermore, studies show that regular magnesium intake can reduce the number of migraine attacks as well as the intensity of the pain.

This connection between magnesium deficiency and migraines gives us an opportunity to manage the symptoms of the disease by taking magnesium. Regular magnesium intake can also have a positive effect on ordinary tension headaches.

WHAT CAUSES MAGNESIUM DEFICIENCY IN MIGRAINE SUFFERERS?

Magnesium plays a key role in controlling excitation transmission. In other words, the transmission of signals along neurons or muscle cells. Magnesium deficiency may increase the excitability of muscle and nerve fibres. As a result, the muscles in the shoulder and neck area become tense, which can also trigger common tension headaches. Magnesium deficiency may also cause the blood vessels in the brain to constrict, leading to migraine attacks. For this reason, it is recommended that both migraine sufferers and people who frequently experience tension headaches ensure that they are getting enough magnesium.

HOW CAN MAGNESIUM HELP ALLEVIATE MIGRAINES?

Medical studies show that migraine sufferers benefit from the preventive effect of magnesium. According to these studies, supplemental magnesium can help reduce the number of migraine attacks and the intensity of the pain. But people who suffer from tension headaches can also benefit from regular magnesium intake. This is because magnesium helps prevent muscle tension in the shoulder and neck area, which causes tension headaches.

HOW MUCH MAGNESIUM IS RECOMMENDED FOR MIGRAINE SUFFERERS?

Magnesium supplementation has been proven effective in preventing migraines. Studies demonstrate that supplementing with 300 mg of magnesium (such as Magnesium-Diasporal® 300 mg) twice daily over a period of three months can reduce not only the number of migraine attacks but also the pain intensity of the individual attacks.

The German Migraine and Headache Society (DMKG) also recommends high-dose magnesium for migraine treatment and prevention.

Magnesium in the form of magnesium citrate has been shown to be very effective in preventing migraines. Since magnesium citrate occurs naturally in the body, it is well tolerated. Nearly all Magnesium-Diasporal® products contain easy-to-absorb magnesium citrate.

Good to know:

Magnesium can be taken without risk of overdose, even when taken over longer periods. If kidney function is not impaired, any excess magnesium is eliminated in the urine. An overdose is therefore virtually impossible.
